Job Title: Dashboard and Data Science Director

We are seeking a Dashboard and Data Science Director to support operations for a USAID-financed five-year project that will be managed out of our Nairobi office. The Dashboard and Data Science Director is responsible for developing and managing interactive dashboards using Apache Superset, applying various visualizations to present key metrics. This role includes managing SQL queries and data sources, ensuring efficiency and optimizing performance. The Dashboard and Data Science Director also configures security settings, collaborates with database administrators for secure data access, and provides training for business users. Advanced tasks may include creating custom plugins and visualizations using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to enhance dashboard functionality.
This will be a full-time position based at our Nairobi, Kenya office. Local nationals are encouraged to apply.
2. Responsibilities
- Dashboard Development in Superset
- Create, customize, and manage interactive dashboards using Apache Superset
- Utilize Superset’s charting capabilities (bar charts, pie charts, heatmaps, etc.) to represent key metrics and insights.
- Develop custom filters, calculated columns, and metrics using Superset’s SQL and query-building features.
- SQL and Data Source Management
- Connect Superset to multiple data sources such as relational databases, cloud-based data warehouses, and BI tools.
- Write, optimize, and maintain SQL queries to pull accurate data for dashboards.
- Manage and create dataset definitions in Superset, ensuring they are well-structured and efficient.
- Integration and Data Security
- Configure and manage the Superset environment, including security settings, authentication methods, and role-based access controls.
- Collaborate with database administrators to ensure secure and optimized access to data.
- User Training and Support
- Train business users and stakeholders on how to use and interpret dashboards.
- Provide documentation and tutorials for end-users on how to create their own reports using Superset.
- Performance Optimization
- Monitor and optimize the performance of dashboards, ensuring they are responsive and efficient.
- Implement caching and performance tuning strategies within Superset to handle large datasets.
- Advanced Customization and Extension
- Develop custom plugins, visualizations, or dashboard features using Superset’s extensibility features.
- Use JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to further customize Superset’s UI if needed.
3. Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field with a minimum of eight (8) years of work experience, OR a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of work experience.
- Experience in the administration of large, complex data projects.
- Experience and knowledge of managing data for USAID and/or federal agencies.
- Strong knowledge and experience with SQL, Apache Superset (or similar BI tools such as Tableau, PowerBI), HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Excellent English writing and speaking skills (ILR minimum S4 and R4).
- Resourceful in resolving problems and initiating solutions.
- Previous work experience in difficult-to-reach areas in East Africa.
